Have you ever heard of what is sandbagging in chess? if not, then this article is the answer. This article will provide information about “ what is sandbagging in chess”?  

If it is illegal or not? ranking system, why the use of sandbagging? how is it impacting the game and the players?

When it comes to chess, there is a mischievous practice, or rather, a method of cheating, or deceiving the rating system of chess, opponents, judges, viewers, or the whole world for their selfish advantage.

A game of chess is very fascinating to watch and play. The strategic moves and counter-attacks make this sport great, but this game has a dark side.

Some experienced players intentionally decrease their rank or rating while violating sportsmanship and the spirit of the game by playing with lower-ranking or weaker players in a lower-rated tournament for the tournament price.

 Additionally, a low-rated tournament meant that the experienced player was not playing the game according to their full ability, and quality. ‘

They use a tactic called sandbagging sandbagging chess is an unrighteous practice or method used by experienced chess players. 

Let’s discuss it briefly in the later section of the article on “what is sandbagging in chess“.

1. What Is Sandbagging In Chess?

An unethical, inappropriate, disrespectful, method, tactic, practice is sometimes used by higher-ranked players which is very unrighteous and defames the sportsmanship spirit, and greatness of this game. 

“What is sandbagging in chess?” refers to an individual who intentionally misrepresents one’s true position by losing constantly until they successfully manage to lower their rank or rating to the point.

Where they can participate and compete in amateur-level chess tournaments and play against amateur players or low-ranked players and win matches easily and win tournament prize money. 

Moreover, experienced chess players use this unethical, tactic for their benefit. they intentionally, play low according to the ability and quality of their game intelligence. 

In short, they use it to earn or win easy money and fame. For them, it is like easy money easy honey.

But it is disheartening for the lower-rank or low-rated chess players and is against the moral and sportsmanship spirit of the game. 

Now, let us understand the intent behind misrepresenting one’s true position in the game of chess. therefore, let us meet in the next section of the article.

In short, the definition of sandbagging in chess, is intentionally hiding or underplaying the true ability and quality of the game. Now, why do they use this fraud tactic? well, there can be a few reasons.

2.1. Selfish Gains And Fame :

Through sandbagging in chess, experienced players purposely decrease their rank at a certain level, which allows them to participate in underqualified chess tournaments and confirm easy big amounts of money prizes, easy advertisements, and lots of sponsors.

Moreover, they also use this undignified path to sustain or pleasure their egos by claiming an easy win over the low-rated or weak players.

Some players do it purposely to violate the rules and regulations of the game and to disturb the rating system. 

Now, this mischievous act or this pathetic practice from the experienced players has a lot of negative impact on the chess community.

2.2. Consequences Of Sandbagging in Chess:

Now, devious action has a devious impact, and selfish acts like sandbagging chess by experienced chess players have a negative impact on the chess community. 

Firstly, injustice. when a player of higher quality and ability competes against a weaker player, it is an injustice to the weak player and the chess tournament. And also for those who look up to a challenge and want to edge their skill. 

Secondly, loss of faith. sandbagging in chess makes friends into foes. The chess community loses trust in that player, and as a consequence, everyone starts to doubt each other.

2.3. Action On Sandbagging :

Chess federation has taken many action and preventive measures to counter sandbaggers.

The chess federation and the organizers of respective tournaments inspect every doubtable move played by the respective ranked player.

In short, if that player is playing according to ability and quality to his/her rank.

3. Rating System

As per the name, it is easily understandable, according to a player’s performance in chess tournaments or chess games, the chess federation gave the rating.

The rating system is used by various chess organizations like fide, ECF (English Chess Federation), ICCF (International Correspondence Chess Federation), and the US Chess Federation. chess.com and internet chess clubs, online chess platforms, and use rating systems. 

In addition, there are various rating systems like the INGO rating system, Harkness rating system, and the ELOS rating system.

3.1. Ingo Rating System: 

West Germany Chess Federation, invented by Anton Hoesslinger. The ingo rating system calculates the total matches—the number of wins, which should be over 50%.

3.2. Harkness Rating System: 

First came in sight of the organiser named Kenneth Harkness in 1956. The players get an average rank when they win over 50%.

3.3. Elo Rating System:  

The elo system Is the most common Rating System designed by Arpad Elo. FIDE Uses The Elo Rating System and is also used by online chess platforms such as Chess24.Com and Internet Chess Club.

It is divided like this: above 2700+ are called Great Grandmasters. A player between 1399 and 1200 is called a class D player.

4. Conclusion

Well, “misrepresent one’s true position” known as sandbagging is a serious offense in chess, one should play with an honest and clear mindset to win a chess game on their own.

There are some cases where an experienced player was intentionally losing the ratings, most probably in the first round.

What will be the price if one is performing an act of self-satisfaction without completely defeating the opponent on his/her power? that will be nothing if that person is already defeated by the opponent, then only they will be left with a shameful legacy.

This kind of act mostly happened by a higher rated player in low rated tournaments.

Chess is all about legacy and building a legacy requires the foundation of dedication and hard work. So, stop sandbagging in chess and start to make an effort with your mindful strategies.

Thus, one should start by learning some rookie-based moves like how to win chess in 4 moves. but learning in chess is what makes it a fun game.
